SLEEK & STYLISH, WELCOME TO INDIAWOOD!KHAANAQuirkDescription
Sleek, white, simplistic, minimal, clean, white tiled, mirrored mosaics, candle light.... No, you aren't having a relaxing bath in a newly fitted bathroom. It's actually a local Indian curry restaurant and takeaway! This unsuspecting gem lies on the streets of Catford. Not immediately an obvious location for eating out, this quirk has 'local secret' written all over it. The takeaway service goes completely unnoticed in the restaurant's easygoing cool environment. More contemporary allure than a Bollywood film set with a local feel that's second to none. You're encouraged to let go, unwind and enjoy... bubbles not included. QuirkDiscoverMore... Shakirah Mustapha AN UNDERGROUND CULINARY REVOLUTIONIt is impossible to ignore the new food-revolution that is spreading through London like a quiet wildfire: supper clubs (a.k.a. pop-up restaurants) originating from their Cuban counterpart, “paladares”. The concept is simple: host a dinner party for a bunch of strangers.
THE BASEMENT GALLEY
QuirkDescription
Inviting strangers to your home and cooking for them seems like a crazy idea, especially in a big city like London. However, as it is an event that attracts both the social and foodie adventurer types, you are guaranteed a night that will stimulate both your taste buds and brain. And although supper clubs are becoming more popular, there still remains that feeling of exclusivity and secrecy due to the underground nature of the phenomena. The night we attend The Basement Galley supper, it is raining. We walk from Brixton station in the drizzle, cold and damp, but excited, if a little apprehensive, for what awaits us. We find ourselves outside a regular London town house on a somewhat non-descript Brixton street. We take a breath and walk down the stairs leading to the basement flat. When we knock, we realize the door is ajar and tentatively, we enter. It’s open plan and our first thought was “oh god, we’re in a stranger’s living room!” But luckily, Ben, one of our hosts, pops his head round from the kitchen and greets us with a big smile and a friendly: “hey! you’re early!” We make ourselves at home on the vintage Brixton sofa and sip on some delightful punch that has clearly been awaiting our arrival.
